Student’s Maternity Coverages

The Maternity coverage is one of the essential health benefits that is covered by all health insurance plans offered to individuals, families, and small groups. Maternity insurance for pregnancy, labour, delivery, and newborn baby care became mandatory in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act.Maternity coverage was not a guaranteed benefit before this act in 2014, and only about 12% of plans sold in the individual market included this coverage, maternity coverage was available only in some health insurance plans or had to be added as a special rider to a plan. Pregnancy was considered to be a pre-existing condition, meaning maternity coverage would cost more and unavailable to women who were already pregnant when they enrolled.

While choosing health insurance for the time in abroad, it’s important to make sure your plan includes all the benefits you need. Pregnancies can come, planned or not, so if there’s a chance that you could become pregnant, you will want to make sure that your plan includes coverage for maternity. Pregnancy is an exciting time in one’s life but the added stress of uncovered medical bills can be overwhelming, so it’s important to make sure you have proper insurance coverage in place!

Student Plans

The Student Health Insurance plans also offer maternity coverage on certain levels of the plan. Maternity coverage is available on the Budget, Select, and Elite levels, on the Student Secure plan and on the Student Health Advantage plan, maternity coverage is available on the Platinum level. To be eligible for maternity insurance plan you do have to be enrolled as a full-time international student with a valid student visa. The student maternity insuranceplan will be valid if you become pregnant after the effective start date of your plan. If any student is already pregnant there is no valid plans and coverage for her, it is only applicable for students who become pregnant while being a part of the institution.

Student’s Maternity Coverages

  • Parental Care is very important the mother and the child during pregnancy. These include ultra-sonography, urinal tests, routine blood tests for monitoring the child’s development. Medical expenses are also included which are needed during pregnancy. The mother needa pre-natal check-up every 4 to 6 weeks for the first 32 weeks, every 2 to 3 weeks for the 32nd to 37th weeks, and every week from the 37th week until delivery. In USA parental care cost around $20,000 and can be more if you have a risk pregnancy. These total expenses can be secured if you have ainsurance plan.
  • Labor and delivery of child is the most expensive medical cost during pregnancy. Hospital stay, which can vary in length depending on the type of birth and complications are included.Without insurance, on an average, an uncomplicated vaginal birth will cost around $12,000, while a standard caesarean section will cost $17,000.
  • Postnatal Care lasts six to eight weeks after the child’s birth, when both mother and child needs physical and emotional support. The cost of postnatal care is about $ 200 per visit without any insurance. This period is also been secured under the maternity coverage.

Most institutes will require that international students pay for medical insurance as part of their fees. With this, the student can get prenatal care if she chooses to keep the baby or in some schools, the health insurance will pay for an abortion if she chooses to end the pregnancy.
